What Is Home Battery Storage and Why Are Melbourne Homeowners Investing?

Home battery storage systems capture excess electricity – typically from solar panels – and store it for use when you need it most: evenings, overnight, during peak tariff periods, or when the grid goes down. With Melbourne electricity prices consistently rising and feed-in tariffs dropping below 5c/kWh, storing your solar energy rather than exporting it makes increasing financial sense.

A well-sized home battery can save a typical Melbourne household $1,000 – $2,500 per year on electricity bills, and with the right setup, you can achieve 80 – 90% energy self-sufficiency.

As a NETCC Approved Seller and CEC Accredited installer, Carlin Co has been installing home batteries across Melbourne since the technology became mainstream. This guide covers everything you need to know about costs, brands, sizing, and installation.

Home Battery Storage Costs in Melbourne – 2026 Pricing

The total cost of a home battery installation in Melbourne ranges from $8,000 to $18,000 before rebates, depending on battery capacity, brand, and installation complexity.

Battery Unit Costs by Capacity

Small batteries (5 – 6 kWh) – $5,500 – $8,000: Suitable for apartments, units, or smaller households with modest energy consumption. Products like the Enphase IQ Battery 5P or a small BYD HVS module fit this category.

Medium batteries (10 – 13.5 kWh) – $9,000 – $14,000: The sweet spot for most Melbourne homes. The Tesla Powerwall 2 (13.5 kWh), BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS 10.2, and Sungrow SBR 9.6 all fall in this range. These store enough energy to power a typical home from late afternoon through the morning, covering the expensive peak and shoulder periods.

Large batteries (15 – 30 kWh) – $14,000 – $28,000: For larger homes, all-electric properties, or those wanting maximum energy independence. Multiple battery modules can be stacked – for example, two Tesla Powerwalls provide 27 kWh of storage.

Installation Costs

Professional installation typically adds $2,000 – $4,000 to the battery unit cost, covering:

• Mounting the battery (wall or floor, indoor or outdoor)
• Connecting to your existing solar inverter or installing a hybrid inverter
• Switchboard modifications and circuit protection
• System configuration and commissioning
• Grid connection paperwork with your electricity distributor
• Certificate of Electrical Safety

Popular Home Battery Brands in Melbourne

The Australian home battery market is dominated by a handful of proven brands. Here’s a quick overview – for a detailed comparison, see our Tesla Powerwall vs BYD vs Sungrow comparison guide.

Tesla Powerwall 2 & 3: The most recognisable name in home batteries. The Powerwall 2 offers 13.5 kWh capacity with 5kW continuous output (7kW peak). The Powerwall 3 (where available) integrates a solar inverter, simplifying installation. Tesla’s app provides excellent monitoring and control. As a Tesla Certified installer, Carlin Co is authorised to install and service Powerwall systems.

BYD Battery-Box Premium: A modular system available in both high-voltage (HVS/HVM) and low-voltage configurations. The modular design means you can start with 5.1 kWh and expand up to 25.6 kWh. BYD uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which offers superior cycle life and thermal safety.

Sungrow SBR Series: Competitive pricing with solid performance. The SBR series offers 9.6 – 25.6 kWh in modular configurations. Pairs naturally with Sungrow hybrid inverters, which are among the most cost-effective on the market.

Enphase IQ Battery: A unique microinverter-based approach that integrates seamlessly with Enphase solar systems. Available in 5 kWh and 10 kWh configurations, with easy expansion. Particularly well-suited for complex roof layouts.

How to Size Your Home Battery

Getting the right battery size is crucial – too small and you’ll still buy expensive peak electricity; too large and you’re paying for storage capacity you don’t use.

A good starting point:

• Check your evening/overnight electricity consumption (your retailer’s app or smart meter data shows this)
• A typical Melbourne household uses 8 – 15 kWh between 4pm and 8am
• Your battery should cover at least 70 – 80% of this overnight usage
• Factor in your solar system size – a larger solar system can charge a larger battery

For most Melbourne homes with a 6.6kW solar system, a 10 – 13.5 kWh battery is the sweet spot. See our solar system sizing guide to ensure your solar and battery are properly matched.

Battery Rebates in Victoria – What Is Actually Available in 2026

The Victorian Solar Homes battery rebate is closed. Solar Victoria stopped accepting new applications for the $2,950 battery rebate on 30 June 2023, and it is no longer accepting applications for the interest-free battery loan that replaced it. If you have seen the $2,950 figure quoted elsewhere, it is out of date.

The live pathway for Melbourne households is the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program – an Australian Government program that opened on 1 July 2025. It is delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, so the discount is applied by your installer at the point of sale rather than claimed back afterwards.

From 1 May 2026 the discount tapers by battery size, so a larger battery no longer earns a proportional increase:

  • First 14 kWh of usable capacity – full rate
  • Above 14 kWh and up to 28 kWh – 60% of the rate
  • Above 28 kWh and up to 50 kWh – 15% of the rate

The underlying certificate value also steps down every six months (January and July) rather than annually. For a typical 10–13.5 kWh Melbourne home battery this still works out at roughly 30% off the installed cost – and because the value declines on a fixed schedule, installing earlier in a six-month window is worth more than installing later in it.

Victoria’s own solar panel (PV) rebate is still open – up to $1,400, plus an optional matching interest-free loan. From 1 July 2026 the combined household income cap dropped from $210,000 to $150,000 per year, and the property must be valued under $3 million.

Rebate details verified against Solar Victoria and Australian Government sources on 1 August 2026. Program terms change – call us on 0432 632 346 and we will confirm what applies to your address before you commit.

Battery Storage With and Without Solar

While batteries are most commonly paired with solar panels, they can also be installed without solar to take advantage of time-of-use electricity tariffs – charging from the grid during cheap off-peak periods (typically overnight) and discharging during expensive peak periods.

However, the economics are significantly better with solar. A solar-plus-battery system typically pays for itself in 7 – 10 years, while a battery-only system may take 12 – 15 years. If you don’t have solar yet, consider a combined solar, battery, and EV charger package for the best value.

What About Backup Power?

Most home batteries can provide backup power during grid outages, but this requires specific configuration during installation. In standard “grid-connected” mode, your battery and solar system will shut down during a blackout (this is a safety requirement to protect line workers).

To enable backup, your installer needs to set up a “backup gateway” or “backup box” that isolates your home from the grid and creates a mini power system. This adds $500 – $1,500 to installation costs but provides genuine energy security during Melbourne’s increasingly frequent extreme weather events.

Installation Process – What to Expect

A typical home battery installation takes one full day. Here’s the process:

1. Site assessment: We inspect your switchboard, solar system (if existing), and proposed battery location
2. System design: We specify the right battery, inverter configuration, and backup circuits
3. Installation day: Mount battery, connect to solar/grid, configure monitoring, test all functions
4. Commissioning: Submit paperwork to your electricity distributor and activate monitoring
5. Handover: Walk you through the monitoring app and system operation
