Yes, You Need a Licensed Electrician

In Victoria, all electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician. This includes the wiring required to connect a split system air conditioner. While an air conditioning installer (refrigeration mechanic) handles the unit itself, the refrigerant lines, and the mounting, the electrical connection must be done by a licensed electrical contractor who will issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the work.

Some air conditioning companies have electricians on staff or subcontract the electrical work. Others will install the unit and leave the final electrical connection for you to arrange separately. Either way, the electrical component is a legal requirement and cannot be done by an unlicensed person, regardless of how simple it might appear.

What Electrical Work Does a Split System Need?

The electrical work required for a split system installation depends on the size of the unit and the condition of your existing electrical system. Here is what is typically involved:

Dedicated Circuit

Every split system air conditioner requires its own dedicated circuit from your switchboard. This means a new circuit breaker in your switchboard and new cabling run from the board to the location of the indoor or outdoor unit. Split systems cannot be plugged into a standard power point or share a circuit with other appliances. Running the unit on a shared circuit risks overloading the wiring, tripping the breaker, and voiding the manufacturer’s warranty.

Isolating Switch

Australian standards require a weatherproof isolating switch to be installed adjacent to the outdoor unit. This allows the system to be safely disconnected for servicing. The isolating switch must be within one metre of the outdoor unit and readily accessible.

Cable Sizing

The cable running from the switchboard to the unit must be correctly sized for the unit’s electrical load. A small 2.5kW bedroom unit may run on 2.5mm cable, while a larger 8kW or 10kW living room unit may require 4mm or 6mm cable. Using undersized cable creates a fire risk and will not pass inspection.

Switchboard Capacity

Before installing a split system, your electrician needs to confirm that your switchboard has capacity for an additional circuit. Older switchboards may be full, or the main supply may not support the additional load. In some cases, a switchboard upgrade is needed before the air conditioner can be connected.

How Much Does the Electrical Work Cost for a Split System?

The electrical component of a split system installation is separate from the cost of the air conditioning unit and its installation by the refrigeration mechanic. Here are typical electrical costs in Melbourne:

Standard installation (short cable run, switchboard has space): $350 to $600. This covers a new circuit breaker, cabling from the switchboard to the unit, an isolating switch, and the Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Longer cable run or difficult access: $600 to $1,000. If the switchboard is on the opposite side of the house from the unit, or cabling needs to run through roof spaces, under floors, or through brick walls, the labour and materials cost increases.

Three-phase unit: Add $200 to $400 for three-phase connection. Larger commercial-grade split systems (typically 10kW and above) run on three-phase power, which requires a three-phase circuit and breaker. Melbourne’s diverse housing stock creates specific challenges for split system installations. Victorian and Edwardian terraces in suburbs like Fitzroy, Carlton, and Richmond often have narrow side passages and limited switchboard space. The cable run from the switchboard to a rear living area can be lengthy, and accessing the ceiling space in these period homes requires care to avoid disturbing original plaster.

In newer apartments across South Yarra, Southbank, and Docklands, body corporate rules often dictate where outdoor units can be placed, which affects cable routing. Some strata buildings have dedicated air conditioning circuits pre-wired, while others require a new circuit from the apartment’s sub-board.

Weatherboard homes in suburbs like Bentleigh, Hampton, and Moorabbin typically present the most straightforward installations, with accessible roof spaces and switchboards that can usually accommodate an additional circuit without major modification.

MULTIPLE UNITS

Installing Multiple Split Systems

Many Melbourne homes install two or three split systems to cover different zones. Each unit requires its own dedicated circuit, which means multiple new breakers in the switchboard and multiple cable runs. This is where switchboard capacity becomes particularly important.

If you are planning to install multiple split systems, it is worth having your electrician assess the switchboard and plan all the circuits before the air conditioning installer begins work. This avoids the situation where the second or third unit cannot be connected because the board is full or the main supply is overloaded.

Split System Electrical FAQs

Can I plug a split system into a normal power point?

No. Split system air conditioners must be hardwired to a dedicated circuit from your switchboard. They cannot be plugged into a standard 10-amp power point. This is both a safety requirement under Australian wiring rules and a condition of the manufacturer’s warranty. The only exception is very small portable units (not split systems), which may use a standard outlet.

Does the electrician need to come before or after the air conditioning installer?

Ideally, the electrician should do a pre-installation assessment first to confirm switchboard capacity and plan the cable route. The air conditioning installer then mounts and connects the unit. The electrician can run the dedicated circuit either before or after the unit is mounted, but the final connection must be completed by the electrician. Will my lights flicker when the air conditioner starts?

A slight, momentary flicker when a large compressor starts is normal and nothing to worry about. Most residential split systems up to 8kW use a 20-amp circuit breaker. Larger units (8kW to 14kW) may require a 25 or 32-amp breaker. Your electrician will size the breaker based on the maximum current draw specified by the manufacturer, which is printed on the unit’s compliance plate.

Can I use the same circuit for two small split systems?

No. Each split system requires its own dedicated circuit. Sharing a circuit creates a risk of overloading the wiring and will not comply with the manufacturer’s installation requirements or Australian wiring standards.
