When a Meter Box Upgrade Is Needed

The meter box is the connection point between your property and the electricity network. Over time, meter panels corrode, become damaged, or simply run out of space for additional metering equipment. An upgrade resolves these issues and ensures the point of supply meets current network standards.

Corroded or Damaged Panels

Older meter boxes, particularly those on the south side of a building or exposed to weather, deteriorate over time. Rust, water ingress, and physical damage can compromise the safety of the metering equipment and may result in a defect notice from the network operator. Replacing the meter panel restores the installation to a safe and compliant condition.

Solar and EV Charger Installations

Installing a solar system or EV charger often requires additional metering or a larger meter panel to accommodate the new equipment. If the existing meter box does not have enough space or is not rated for the additional load, an upgrade is needed before the solar or EV installation can proceed.

Network Defect Notices

When the distribution network issues a defect notice on your meter box, the repair must be completed by a Level 2 electrician within the specified timeframe. We attend to defect notices promptly, complete the required work, and arrange the network re-inspection.

Meter Relocation

If a renovation, extension, or new fence line means the meter box needs to move, this is Level 2 work that involves disconnecting the supply, physically relocating the panel, and reconnecting. We handle the network application, the physical move, and the reconnection as a single job.

Received a defect notice or need your meter box replaced? We can assess the situation and get the work scheduled quickly.

What the Upgrade Involves

New Meter Panel

A new meter panel that meets the current network operator specifications. The panel is sized for your current metering requirements plus any planned additions such as solar or time-of-use metering. All connections are re-made to the new panel and tested.

Service Protection

The service fuse, neutral link, and earthing connections are inspected and replaced if needed. These components protect the incoming supply and are critical safety elements. Upgrading them as part of the meter box replacement ensures the entire point of supply is in good condition.

Network Compliance

All meter box work is completed to the network operator’s service installation rules. We handle the application, coordinate the planned outage, complete the work, and arrange the inspection. You receive confirmation once the work passes network inspection.

Meter Box Upgrade FAQs

How long does a meter box upgrade take?

The physical work is typically completed in half a day. There is a temporary power interruption during the changeover, usually lasting two to four hours. The overall timeline depends on the network application processing, which we manage for you.

Can I upgrade the meter box and switchboard at the same time?

Yes, and it often makes sense to do both together since the supply will already be disconnected for the meter box work. Combining a switchboard upgrade with the meter panel replacement reduces the total disruption and can lower the overall cost.

Who is responsible for the meter box?

The meter panel and its housing are the property owner’s responsibility. The meter itself belongs to the metering provider. When you upgrade the meter box, you replace the panel that houses the meter, but the meter is reconnected or replaced by the metering company.

What if I have received a defect notice?

Defect notices specify a timeframe for the repair to be completed. Contact us as soon as you receive one and we will prioritise the work to meet the deadline. We complete the repair and arrange re-inspection with the network operator.
