Power Out in One Room? Common Causes and Fixes
You walk into the bedroom and flip the light switch. Nothing. The lamp on the bedside table is dead too. But the kitchen lights are on, the TV is working in the lounge, and the fridge is humming away. You have lost power in one room, or maybe a couple of rooms, and the rest of the house is fine. This is one of the most common electrical issues Melbourne homeowners call us about, and while it can be alarming, it usually has a straightforward explanation. Before you call an electrician, here is what to check and what might be causing the problem.
First Things First: Check Your Switchboard
The very first thing to do when you lose power in part of your home is to check your switchboard. This is the grey or cream box usually located near your meter, often in the garage, laundry, or on an external wall. Open it up and look at the switches inside.
What to Look For
In a modern switchboard, you will see a row of switches (circuit breakers or RCBOs) that should all be in the ON position, typically pointing up. If one has tripped, it will be in the OFF position, pointing down, or sometimes sitting in a middle position. This is the circuit that has lost power.
Try resetting it by pushing it firmly to the OFF position first, then back to ON. If it stays on, you may have just had a temporary fault, perhaps from a power surge during a storm or a faulty appliance that was plugged in. If it trips again immediately or shortly after, there is a fault on that circuit and you should leave it off and call an electrician.
If you have an older switchboard with ceramic fuses, the process is different. You will need to check each fuse carrier to see if the fuse wire has blown. If you are not comfortable doing this, or if you have a ceramic fuse box, it is worth getting an electrician to take a look. Check Whether It Is a Supply Issue
Before blaming your wiring, check whether the issue is with your electricity supply. If you have lost power to the entire house, check whether your neighbours are also out. A supply interruption from the network (Citipower, Powercor, Jemena, AusNet, or United Energy, depending on your area of Melbourne) is outside your control and outside what an electrician can fix. You can check planned outages and report faults on your distributor’s website.
If you have power in some rooms but not others, it is almost certainly an issue within your property, not a supply problem. The exception is three-phase properties, which we will cover further down.
Common Causes of Losing Power in One Room
Tripped Circuit Breaker
This is the most common cause by far. Each circuit breaker in your switchboard protects a specific circuit, which might supply power to one room, a group of rooms, or a specific appliance. When that circuit draws too much current (overload) or experiences a short circuit, the breaker trips to protect the wiring from overheating.
Common triggers include plugging in too many appliances on one circuit (heaters, hair dryers, and kettles on the same circuit is a classic one), a faulty appliance with an internal short, water getting into an outdoor power point, or a damaged cable inside a wall.
Tripped RCD Protecting a Group of Circuits
In some switchboard configurations, a single RCD (safety switch) protects multiple circuits. If the RCD trips, you might lose power to several rooms at once while others remain unaffected. The RCD trips when it detects current leaking to earth, which could be caused by a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, or moisture in a connection.
This is actually your safety switch doing its job. It has detected a potential electrocution hazard and cut the power. If resetting it causes it to trip again, unplug everything on the affected circuits and try again. If it stays on with nothing plugged in, plug appliances back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring itself and you need an electrician.
Faulty Power Point (GPO)
Sometimes the issue is isolated to a single power point rather than the whole circuit. A faulty GPO with a loose internal connection can stop working without tripping the circuit breaker. The rest of the room might still have power if it is on a different part of the circuit, or the room might go dark if the faulty GPO is wired in series and the fault has broken the connection to downstream points.
Signs of a faulty power point include scorch marks around the outlet, a burning smell, a warm faceplate, or sparking when you plug something in. If you notice any of these, stop using that power point immediately and call an electrician. These are signs of a loose connection that is arcing, which is a genuine fire risk.
Loose Connection
Loose connections are one of the most common faults we find in Melbourne homes, particularly older ones. Over decades, the vibrations from nearby traffic, thermal expansion and contraction of cables, and simple aging of components can cause connections to loosen. A loose connection in a junction box, at a power point, or in the switchboard itself can cause intermittent power loss, flickering, or a complete loss of power on a circuit.
Loose connections are also dangerous because they create resistance, which generates heat. A connection that is slightly loose might work most of the time but get hot under load. Over time, this can damage insulation, melt plastic components, and potentially cause a fire. If your power goes out and comes back randomly, or if power points or switches feel warm to the touch, a loose connection is a likely culprit.
Overloaded Circuit
Older Melbourne homes were wired for the electrical demands of the 1960s or 1970s, when a typical house might have had a few lights, a fridge, a washing machine, and maybe a TV. Today, a single room might have a computer, monitor, printer, phone charger, heater, and a lamp all drawing power from one or two outlets on the same circuit.
If your circuit breaker keeps tripping when you use a particular combination of appliances, the circuit is overloaded. The solution is not a bigger breaker (which would be dangerous as the wiring is not rated for more current), but rather redistributing the load across different circuits or having an electrician add a new circuit to serve that area.
Damaged Cable in the Wall
This is less common but does happen. Cables inside walls can be damaged by nails or screws driven in during renovations (hanging a picture or mounting a TV bracket is a classic cause), by rodent damage (rats and mice chewing through cable insulation), or by deterioration of the insulation over time, particularly in older homes where the original rubber-insulated wiring may be in poor condition.
A damaged cable inside a wall is harder to diagnose because you cannot see it. An electrician will use insulation resistance testing and sometimes thermal imaging to locate the fault. In some cases, the damaged section of cable needs to be replaced, which may involve some wall access.
Losing Power to Half the House: The Three-Phase Question
Some Melbourne homes, particularly larger or older properties, have a three-phase electrical supply. Three-phase means your power comes in on three separate supply cables (called phases), each carrying 230 volts. Your circuits are distributed across these three phases.
If you lose one phase, you lose power to every circuit connected to that phase, which might be roughly a third of your home. From the inside, it looks like you have lost power to random rooms while others are fine. The pattern does not make obvious sense because the circuits are not necessarily grouped by location.
Losing a phase can be caused by a supply issue from the network (a blown fuse in the street, a fault on the distribution network), a fault in your main switch or switchboard, or a problem with the service cable between the street and your meter. If you suspect you have lost a phase, check whether the affected circuits correspond to one column of breakers in your switchboard (in a three-phase board, the three phases are typically arranged in columns). If so, call your electricity distributor to check the supply before calling an electrician.
What an Electrician Does to Diagnose the Problem
When we attend a job for a partial power outage, we follow a systematic diagnostic process. We start at the switchboard, check the supply, test all breakers and RCDs, and then work out through the circuits to locate the fault. We use insulation resistance testing to check the condition of the wiring on each circuit, and we can use a circuit tracer to identify which cables run where, particularly in older homes where the circuit layout may not follow any logical pattern.
For intermittent faults, where the power drops out and comes back, diagnosis can take a bit longer. We may need to load-test circuits, check connections under load, and use thermal imaging to find hotspots that indicate loose connections or overloaded cables. These intermittent faults are actually more concerning than a dead circuit, because they indicate a connection that is failing under load, which is exactly the condition that causes electrical fires.
When It Is a Simple Fix vs a Wiring Fault
In many cases, a power outage in one room is a simple fix. A tripped breaker that resets and stays on, a faulty appliance that is identified and removed, or a loose wire at a power point that is tightened up. These are quick, straightforward repairs that do not require major work.
However, if the fault is in the wiring itself, the fix may be more involved. Damaged cables in walls, deteriorated insulation throughout a circuit, or a switchboard that needs upgrading are bigger jobs. Frequently Asked Questions About Partial Power Outages
Why has power gone out in just one room?
The most common cause is a tripped circuit breaker in your switchboard. Each breaker protects a specific circuit, which may supply one room or a group of rooms. Check your switchboard for a switch that has moved to the OFF or middle position. If it trips again when you reset it, there is a fault on that circuit and you should call an electrician.
Is it safe to reset a tripped circuit breaker?
It is generally safe to attempt to reset a tripped circuit breaker once. Push it firmly to the OFF position, then back to ON. If it trips again immediately, do not keep trying to reset it. Leave it off and call an electrician, as there is an active fault on that circuit that needs to be diagnosed and repaired.
Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?
A circuit breaker that trips repeatedly is usually caused by one of three things: an overloaded circuit (too many appliances drawing power at once), a short circuit (a fault in the wiring or an appliance where active touches neutral), or a ground fault (current leaking to earth, which trips the RCD). An electrician can diagnose which of these is occurring and fix the underlying cause.
Half my house has lost power. Is it a supply issue?
If you have a three-phase supply and have lost power to roughly a third of your circuits, you may have lost one phase. Check with your neighbours to see if they are also affected. Contact your electricity distributor (Citipower, Powercor, Jemena, AusNet, or United Energy depending on your area) to report a potential supply fault. If your neighbours have power, the issue is likely within your property.
Can I fix a power outage in one room myself?
You can safely check your switchboard and reset a tripped breaker. You can also unplug appliances on the affected circuit to identify a faulty device. However, any work beyond this, including opening power points, checking wiring, or working inside the switchboard, must be carried out by a licensed electrician. Electrical work by unqualified persons is illegal in Victoria and extremely dangerous.
