Outdoor Lighting Applications

Outdoor lighting extends the usable hours of your property, improves safety and security, and enhances the architectural features of your home. We approach each installation with the same attention to fixture selection, placement, and control that we bring to interior lighting.

Entertaining Areas

Decks, pergolas, alfresco areas, and outdoor kitchens benefit from layered lighting that allows you to adjust the mood and brightness. We install dimmable downlights, festoon lighting, step lights, and integrated LED strip to create a space that works for both evening dining and late-night gatherings. Weatherproof power points are included for appliances and speakers.

Facade and Architectural Lighting

Wall-mounted fittings, recessed uplights, and soffit downlights are used to highlight the front of your home. Properly placed facade lighting defines the building’s shape after dark and creates a welcoming entrance. We position fittings to avoid glare to neighbours and the street while achieving the visual effect you want.

Driveways and Pathways

Low-level path lights and bollards provide safe navigation from the street to the front door. Driveway lighting can be integrated with motion sensors or timers so it activates when needed. We use in-ground or spike-mounted fittings rated for vehicle traffic where appropriate, and position them to avoid creating trip hazards.

Pool and Spa Surrounds

Pool and spa areas require fittings that meet specific safety standards for wet zones. We install compliant lighting around pool fences, decking, and garden areas adjacent to water features. The lighting is planned to avoid reflection and glare on the water surface while providing adequate safety lighting.

Technical Considerations

IP Ratings

Every outdoor fitting must have an appropriate IP (Ingress Protection) rating for its location. Fittings exposed to direct rain need a minimum of IP65. In-ground fittings and those near pools require even higher ratings. We only install fittings with the correct rating for each specific location.

12V vs 240V Systems

Low-voltage (12V) systems are common for garden and pathway lighting. They require a transformer but offer flexibility in fixture placement. 240V fittings are used for wall lights, floodlights, and higher-output applications. We select the right voltage for each application and install the supply infrastructure accordingly.

Control and Automation

Outdoor lighting can be controlled via switches, timers, daylight sensors, motion sensors, or smart home systems. We match the control method to the application. Security lights use motion sensors. Facade lighting uses astronomical timers that adjust for seasonal daylight changes. Entertaining areas use dimmers.

Outdoor Lighting FAQs

Can outdoor lights be added to an existing home?

Yes. We run cable through the eaves, along fence lines, through conduit under pathways, or using the existing cable routes in the house. The installation method depends on the property and the location of the fittings. Most retrofits can be completed without visible cabling.

What is the best colour temperature for outdoor lighting?

Warm white (2700K to 3000K) is the most popular choice for residential outdoor lighting. It creates a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere and complements natural materials like timber and stone. Cool white can be used for security and task lighting where brightness and visibility are the priority.

How much does outdoor lighting cost to run?

LED outdoor fittings use very little power. A typical set of garden lights running on a 12V system might draw 30 to 50 watts total, costing a few dollars per month to run for several hours each evening. Timers and sensors reduce running costs further by only operating when needed.

Do I need council approval for outdoor lighting?

Residential outdoor lighting generally does not require council approval. However, if you are in a heritage overlay area or planning commercial-scale lighting, there may be restrictions. We are mindful of light spill to neighbouring properties and can advise on appropriate fitting choices and aiming angles.
