Why Bathroom Electrical Requires a Specialist

Bathrooms are classified as wet areas under AS/NZS 3000 (the Australian Wiring Rules). Strict zoning rules govern what can be installed, where, and how. These regulations exist because water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Every fitting, circuit, and cable run in a bathroom must comply with these requirements.

Wet Area Zoning and Compliance

Bathrooms are divided into zones (Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2, and the remainder) that dictate what electrical equipment can be installed in each area. We understand these zones precisely. Every fitting we install is rated for its location, every circuit is protected by safety switches (RCDs), and all work meets current wiring rules.

Lighting Design for Bathrooms

Good bathroom lighting combines task lighting around the mirror and vanity with ambient lighting for the room. We install IP-rated downlights, vanity lighting, shower-rated fixtures, and LED lighting on dimmer circuits to create a bathroom that functions well and feels right.

Exhaust Fan Installation and Replacement

Effective ventilation is essential to prevent moisture damage and mould. We install ducted exhaust fans that vent to the exterior (not into the roof cavity), integrated fan-light-heater units, and timer or humidity-sensor controls that automate ventilation.

Heated Towel Rails and Underfloor Heating

Electric heated towel rails and in-floor heating systems add comfort and require dedicated circuits with appropriate protection. We install and wire these systems to comply with wet area requirements, connecting them through timers or smart controls for energy-efficient operation.

Planning a bathroom renovation or need to upgrade your existing bathroom electrical? We deliver safe, compliant work that looks as good as it performs.

Bathroom Electrical Standards in Victoria

All bathroom electrical work in Victoria must comply with AS/NZS 3000:2018 (the Wiring Rules). This standard defines the zones around baths, showers, and basins where specific types of equipment can and cannot be installed.

Power points, for example, cannot be installed within Zone 1 (directly above or beside a bath or shower). All circuits serving a bathroom must be protected by a 30mA RCD (safety switch). Fittings within zones must have appropriate IP (Ingress Protection) ratings to resist water ingress.

Getting this wrong creates genuine risk. We ensure every installation meets these standards, and issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety for all prescribed work, giving you documented proof of compliance.

Bathroom Electrical FAQs

Can I have a power point in my bathroom?

Yes, but location is restricted. Power points must be installed outside Zones 0, 1, and 2 as defined by AS/NZS 3000. In practical terms, this usually means at least 600mm from the edge of a shower or bath. We install them in compliant locations with RCD protection.

What IP rating do bathroom lights need?

It depends on the zone. Fittings directly above a shower (Zone 1) typically need at least IPX4. Fittings within Zone 2 (extending 600mm from the shower) need at least IPX4. We select fittings with the correct rating for their specific location.

Should my exhaust fan vent outside?

Yes, always. An exhaust fan that dumps moist air into the roof cavity causes timber rot, mould, and insulation damage. We duct all bathroom exhaust fans to the exterior of the building using insulated ducting to prevent condensation.

Do you coordinate with builders during renovations?

Yes. Bathroom renovations require electrical work at specific stages. We schedule first fix (running cables before tiling) and second fix (connecting fittings after) to align with the build programme.

Do you provide certificates for bathroom electrical work?

Yes. All prescribed bathroom electrical work receives a Certificate of Electrical Safety as required by Victorian law.
