Safety switches save lives. We install, test, and upgrade safety switches to protect your family from electric shock. Whether your switchboard has no safety switches, only partial coverage, or outdated devices that need replacing, we bring it up to current standards.
Safety Switch Services
A safety switch (also called an RCD) monitors the electrical current flowing through a circuit. If it detects current leaking to earth, typically through a person touching a live component, it cuts the power in under 30 milliseconds. That speed is what prevents fatal electric shock.
New Safety Switch Installation
Many older Melbourne homes have no safety switches at all, relying solely on circuit breakers or even older rewirable fuses. Circuit breakers protect against overcurrent but will not protect you from electric shock. We install RCDs across all your circuits for comprehensive protection.
Partial to Full Coverage
Some switchboards have a safety switch on the power circuits but not on the lighting circuits, or vice versa. Current regulations require protection on all final subcircuits. We extend your existing coverage to include every circuit in the home, ensuring there are no gaps in protection.
RCBO Upgrades
Standard safety switches protect a group of circuits, meaning a fault on one circuit trips the safety switch and cuts power to all circuits it covers. RCBOs combine circuit breaker and safety switch protection in a single device, so a fault on one circuit only trips that circuit. This is the preferred configuration for modern switchboard upgrades.
Testing and Compliance
Safety switches should be professionally tested to verify their trip time is within specification. The test button on the device confirms it can trip, but only calibrated testing equipment measures how fast it trips. For rental properties, safety switch testing is a regulatory requirement.

When to Install Safety Switches
No Safety Switches
If your switchboard has only circuit breakers or fuses with no test buttons visible, you have no safety switch protection. This is common in homes built before the mid-1990s. Adding safety switches is the single most important electrical safety upgrade for these homes.
Selling or Renting
Safety switches are required on rental properties in Victoria. For property sales, having safety switches installed demonstrates due diligence and can be a condition of the building inspection. We handle both the installation and the safety inspection report.
Pool or Spa
The combination of water and electricity around pools and spas makes safety switch protection essential. All pool and spa circuits must have individual RCD protection with a maximum rated residual current of 30mA. We install and test to meet the specific requirements of AS/NZS 3000 Section 6.

What is the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?
A circuit breaker protects wiring from overloading and short circuits. A safety switch protects people from electric shock. They look similar in the switchboard, but the safety switch has a test button on the front. Your home needs both: circuit breakers to protect the wiring, and safety switches to protect your family.
How long does installation take?
Installing safety switches in a standard domestic switchboard typically takes one to two hours. If the switchboard needs rearranging to accommodate the new devices, or if circuit wiring needs separating, it may take longer. We advise on the scope after inspecting your switchboard.
Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
This usually indicates a genuine fault. Common causes include a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor fitting, degraded wiring insulation, or too many appliances sharing one safety switch. We can isolate the cause using fault-finding techniques and resolve it.
Are safety switches mandatory in Victoria?
Safety switches are required on all new circuits and renovated circuits. Rental properties must have at least two safety switches covering all power and lighting circuits. While not retrospectively mandatory for owner-occupied homes with no new work, they are strongly recommended for the protection they provide.
