Common Faults We Diagnose

Electrical faults can be obvious or subtle. Some cause immediate disruption, others develop slowly and present as intermittent problems that are difficult to pin down. Our diagnostic approach is systematic, using test equipment and circuit analysis rather than trial and error.

Tripping Circuit Breakers and Safety Switches

A circuit breaker trips due to overcurrent or short circuit. A safety switch (RCD) trips due to earth leakage. The distinction matters because each points to a different type of fault. We test systematically to isolate whether the cause is a faulty appliance, damaged cable, moisture ingress, or a degraded connection within the circuit.

Dead Circuits and Power Points

A power point or entire circuit that has stopped working may have a loose connection, a broken conductor within the cable, a failed circuit breaker, or a fault at a junction point. We trace the circuit from the switchboard through to the affected outlet to locate the break.

Flickering or Dimming Lights

Occasional flickering can indicate a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, a failing transformer (for low-voltage downlights), or a supply-side issue from the distributor. Consistent dimming under load often points to a voltage drop caused by undersized cable or a high-resistance connection.

Burning Smell or Discolouration

Browning or heat marks around a power point, switch, or light fitting indicate an overheating connection. This is a serious fault that requires immediate attention. We identify the source of the overheating, replace any damaged components, and verify the circuit is safe before restoring power.

Dealing with an electrical fault? Describe the symptoms when you call and we will prioritise accordingly. If there is a burning smell or visible damage, turn off the main switch and call immediately.

Our Diagnostic Process

Circuit Isolation

We start at the switchboard and methodically isolate circuits to narrow down which circuit contains the fault. This is faster and more reliable than starting at the symptom and working backwards, especially with intermittent faults.

Instrument Testing

Insulation resistance testing, earth fault loop impedance, RCD trip time testing, and voltage measurements at key points along the circuit. These tests tell us exactly what type of fault exists and roughly where it is located.

Repair and Verification

Once located, we repair the fault and re-test the circuit to confirm it is safe and compliant. You receive a clear explanation of what caused the problem, what was done to fix it, and whether any related work is recommended to prevent recurrence.

Intermittent Faults

Intermittent electrical faults are the most challenging to diagnose because the symptoms may not be present when the electrician arrives. Common causes include loose connections that only fail under heat or vibration, moisture-related faults that appear in wet weather, and overloaded circuits that only trip when multiple appliances run simultaneously.

For stubborn intermittent faults, we can install power logging equipment that monitors the circuit continuously over several days, recording voltage, current, and any fault events. This data often reveals the pattern behind an otherwise unpredictable problem.

Fault Finding FAQs

How long does fault finding take?

Simple faults like a tripping appliance can often be identified within 30 minutes. Complex faults involving buried cable damage or intermittent connections in older wiring may take longer. We will always explain the process and expected timeframe before starting.

Is there a separate charge for fault finding?

Fault finding is charged at our standard hourly rate plus a call-out fee. If the repair can be completed during the same visit, the diagnostic time and repair work are all included in one invoice. We quote separately if additional work beyond the initial fault is required.

What if the fault is not present when you arrive?

We can still test the circuit for underlying issues that may not be causing symptoms at that moment. Insulation resistance and loop impedance tests can reveal degraded cable or connections even when the circuit appears to be working normally. For truly intermittent faults, power logging is the most effective approach.

Should I turn off the power before you arrive?

If there is a burning smell, visible sparks, or physical damage, yes, turn off the main switch immediately. For tripping circuits, leave the tripped breaker off but keep the rest of the switchboard on. For non-urgent faults like a dead power point, leave everything as it is so we can observe the fault in its current state.
