Complex, Large, or Three Phase Upgrades: $4,000 to $5,500+

Larger homes, properties with three phase power supplies, or installations with complicating factors will sit in this range or above. Three phase switchboards are physically larger, require more components, and take longer to install. Homes with 20 or more circuits, multiple sub boards, or those needing meter relocations or supply upgrades will also be at the higher end. We regularly see these costs on larger homes in Toorak, Kew, Canterbury, and Brighton where the homes are substantial and the electrical systems match.

Properties that require asbestos removal around the meter or switchboard, or homes where the supply cable from the street needs to be upgraded to handle increased loads, can push costs above $5,500. These are less common but worth being aware of, especially in homes built during the 1960s and 70s when asbestos backing boards were commonly used in switchboard installations.

What Factors Affect the Cost of a Switchboard Replacement?

Single Phase vs Three Phase Power

Most residential homes in Melbourne run on single phase power, which is a single active conductor supplying 230 volts. Some larger homes, particularly those with ducted air conditioning, workshop equipment, or electric vehicle chargers, have three phase power, which provides three active conductors and 415 volts between phases. Number of Circuits

RCDs vs RCBOs

There are two main approaches to protecting circuits with safety switches. The first is to use a small number of RCDs, each protecting a group of circuits. The second is to use individual RCBOs on each circuit, where each device combines a safety switch and a circuit breaker in one unit. RCBOs are the premium option, and for good reason. If one circuit develops a fault, only that circuit trips, and everything else stays on. With grouped RCDs, a fault on one circuit can take out multiple circuits at once. RCBOs cost more per device, but we recommend them for the convenience and safety they provide.

Meter Relocation

Sometimes the electricity meter needs to be relocated as part of a switchboard upgrade, particularly if the current meter position does not comply with current standards or if the property is being renovated. Why Going With the Cheapest Quote Is Not Always Smart

We get it. When you are getting quotes for a switchboard replacement, it is tempting to go with the lowest number. But with electrical work, the cheapest option can end up costing you more in the long run, or worse, putting your family at risk.

Here is what to watch out for with very low quotes. Some operators use budget components that do not last. Others cut corners on workmanship, leaving connections that are not properly torqued, wiring that is not neatly run, or circuit labelling that is vague or missing. A few do not include a Certificate of Electrical Safety in the price, which is a legal requirement in Victoria for prescribed electrical work.

We have been called out to “fix” switchboards that were installed by others at a low price point, and the workmanship has been concerning. We will give you a realistic timeframe when we quote the job so you can plan accordingly. Your power will need to be off for most of the installation, so we recommend planning around that.

Do I need a permit to replace my switchboard?

You do not need a building permit for a switchboard replacement in most cases. However, the work must be carried out by a licensed electrician who holds a current Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) licence in Victoria. A Certificate of Electrical Safety must be issued and lodged with Energy Safe Victoria upon completion of the work. This is a legal requirement, and any electrician who does not provide one is not complying with Victorian regulations. Will my power be off during the switchboard replacement?

Yes, your power will be off for most of the installation. The duration depends on the complexity of the job, but for a standard replacement you can expect to be without power for 4 to 6 hours. What is the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?

An RCD (Residual Current Device) is a safety switch that protects against electric shock by detecting current leakage. A single RCD typically protects a group of circuits. An RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection) combines the function of an RCD and a circuit breaker in a single device, protecting an individual circuit against both shock and overload. The advantage of RCBOs is that if one circuit trips, only that circuit is affected, not the whole group. We recommend RCBOs for most installations because of this benefit.

Is it worth adding surge protection when replacing my switchboard?

Yes. Surge protection devices installed in your switchboard protect your home’s appliances and electronics from voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes, grid switching, and other power disturbances. Melbourne does experience severe storms, and a single surge event can damage or destroy computers, televisions, fridges, and other expensive equipment.
