What Is a Level 2 Electrician?

A Level 2 Authorised Service Provider (ASP) holds additional qualifications and authorisation from the distribution network operator to work on the electrical infrastructure between the network and your switchboard. This includes the service cable, metering equipment, and point of supply. Standard licensed electricians are not authorised to work on this part of the electrical system.

Service Upgrades

Older properties often have a single-phase 63A or 80A supply that cannot support modern loads. Adding EV chargers, solar systems, or significant renovation work may require a supply upgrade. This involves replacing the service cable, upgrading the metering panel, and potentially upgrading to three-phase power.

Meter Box and Metering Work

Meter box upgrades and replacements fall under Level 2 scope. This includes replacing damaged or corroded meter panels, relocating meters, installing CT metering for larger commercial supplies, and upgrading from old rotating disc meters to digital smart meters. All metering work must be completed by an authorised provider.

Defect Rectification

When the distribution network operator issues a defect notice on your point of supply, the repair must be completed by a Level 2 provider. Common defects include damaged service cables, corroded meter panels, missing or broken meter seals, and weathering damage to the incoming supply. We attend to defect notices and arrange re-inspection with the network.

Disconnection and Reconnection

Temporary and permanent disconnections from the network are Level 2 work. This is needed for demolition, major renovation, or when the supply needs to be shut down for safety while other work is completed. Reconnection after the work is finished is handled through the same authorisation.

The Process

Level 2 work involves coordination with the electricity distribution network. We assess what is needed, prepare the network application, schedule the work (including any planned outage), complete the physical installation, and arrange the network inspection. The entire process is managed for you from the initial call through to final sign-off.

For straightforward jobs like defect repairs and meter box replacements, the turnaround is typically quick. Larger service upgrades and three-phase conversions involve longer network processing times, and we keep you informed at each stage so you know when the work will be completed.

Level 2 Electrician FAQs

What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2?

Level 1 refers to work on the network side (poles, overhead lines, underground mains). Level 2 covers the consumer’s service between the network connection and the switchboard, including metering, service cables, and point of supply equipment. Level 2 is the category relevant to most residential and commercial properties.

Do I need a Level 2 electrician for a switchboard upgrade?

If the switchboard upgrade involves changes to the metering or the incoming service cable, then yes, Level 2 authorisation is required for that portion of the work. If the switchboard upgrade only involves work downstream of the metering, a standard licensed electrician can complete it. We hold both qualifications and handle the full scope.

How long does a service upgrade take?

The physical work is typically completed in one day. The overall timeline depends on the network application process, which can take a few days to a few weeks depending on the complexity and the network operator’s processing times. We lodge the application promptly and keep you updated.

Will I lose power during the work?

Most Level 2 work requires a temporary disconnection of the supply, typically for a few hours during the day. We schedule this to cause the least inconvenience and let you know the expected duration in advance so you can plan around it.
