POWER LOGGING MELBOURNE

Power Logging

Data-driven power quality analysis using calibrated logging equipment. We install power loggers to monitor voltage, current, power factor, harmonics, and load profiles over days or weeks to diagnose issues and inform decisions.

When Power Logging Is Needed

Some electrical problems cannot be diagnosed with a single visit. Intermittent faults, voltage fluctuations, unexplained equipment failures, and high energy bills all benefit from continuous monitoring that captures what is happening on the supply over an extended period.

Voltage Issues

Flickering lights, dimming appliances, or equipment shutting down can indicate voltage drops or surges on the supply. A power logger records the voltage on each phase continuously, capturing sags, swells, and transients that would not be detected during a single-point measurement. The data identifies whether the issue originates on your installation or the network supply.

Load Profiling

Before upgrading a supply, adding EV chargers, or installing solar and battery systems, it is useful to understand the actual demand profile of the property. Power logging shows the peak load, the time-of-use pattern, and the spare capacity available. This data helps size the right solution and avoid unnecessary upgrades.

Intermittent Faults

When a circuit trips randomly or equipment fails without apparent cause, fault finding with a logger can capture the event. The logger records the exact time, affected circuit, and the electrical parameters at the moment of failure. This targeted data is far more useful than guesswork and often resolves problems that have persisted through multiple standard callouts.

Network Supply Disputes

If you suspect the network supply voltage is outside the acceptable range, logged data provides the evidence needed to raise a supply quality complaint with the distribution network operator. Without data, these complaints are difficult to substantiate. A week of continuous logging provides a clear picture of what the network is delivering to your property.

Dealing with an intermittent electrical problem or need data before a major decision? We can install a logger and provide the answers.

What We Measure

Voltage and Current

Continuous recording of voltage and current on every phase. The data shows the actual supply voltage range, peak current draw, and any events where the supply falls outside the standard operating window. This is the foundation of any power quality analysis.

Power Factor

For commercial properties, poor power factor can result in network surcharges and reduced capacity from the existing supply. Logging identifies the power factor profile so correction equipment can be correctly sized and justified.

Harmonics

Harmonic distortion from electronic equipment can cause overheating in neutral conductors, interference with sensitive equipment, and premature failure of motors and transformers. Logging identifies the harmonic spectrum and helps determine whether mitigation is needed.

Power Logging FAQs

How long does the logger stay installed?

Typically seven days. This captures a full week of load patterns including weekdays and weekends. For intermittent faults, a longer monitoring period of two to four weeks may be recommended to ensure the event is captured.

Does the logger affect my power supply?

No. The logger connects to the switchboard via clip-on current transformers and voltage leads. It monitors passively and does not interrupt the supply. Installation and removal each take around 30 minutes with no power interruption.

What do I receive after the logging period?

You receive a report summarising the key findings, including graphs of voltage, current, and power over the logging period. Any events or anomalies are highlighted with analysis and recommendations for corrective action if needed.

Is power logging only for commercial properties?

No. Residential properties with persistent voltage issues, nuisance tripping, or high electricity bills can all benefit from power logging. It is also useful before installing significant new loads like EV chargers or solar systems to understand the existing supply capacity.
