Why Test Your EV Charger?

An EV charger draws significant power for extended periods. If the installation has wiring faults, undersized cables, poor connections, or non-compliant protection devices, those issues may not show up immediately but can create safety risks over time. Regular testing confirms everything is working as it should.

Installation Verification

If your charger was installed by another electrician and you want independent verification, we test the entire circuit from switchboard to charger. We check cable sizing, circuit protection, earthing, RCD operation, and confirm the installation meets AS/NZS 3000 requirements.

Periodic Safety Testing

Like any high-load electrical installation, EV chargers benefit from periodic testing. Connections can loosen over time, RCDs can degrade, and cable insulation can deteriorate. We recommend testing every two years for residential chargers and annually for commercial charging stations.

Troubleshooting Charging Issues

If your charger trips the RCD, charges slowly, shows error codes, or stops mid-charge, we diagnose the issue. Problems can stem from the charger unit itself, the vehicle’s onboard charger, the circuit wiring, or the switchboard protection. Our fault finding process isolates the cause.

Pre-Purchase Property Inspections

Buying a property with an existing EV charger? We verify that the installation is compliant, the charger is functioning correctly, and a valid Certificate of Electrical Safety was issued for the original installation.

Whether you need a compliance check on an existing installation or you are troubleshooting a charging problem, we provide thorough testing with clear documentation.

What We Test

Electrical Circuit

Cable sizing verification, insulation resistance testing, earth fault loop impedance, and connection integrity from switchboard to charger unit. We confirm the circuit is correctly rated for the charger’s maximum draw.

Protection Devices

RCD trip time and trip current testing, circuit breaker rating verification, and confirmation that the protection arrangement meets current standards. EV circuits require specific Type A or Type B RCD protection depending on the charger.

Charger Function

Functional testing of the charger unit itself, including communication with the vehicle, charge initiation and termination, power delivery at rated output, and error code diagnosis for units that are not performing correctly.

Testing Standards and Documentation

All EV charger testing is performed in accordance with AS/NZS 3000 (Wiring Rules) and relevant EV charging standards. We use calibrated test equipment for insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance, RCD response times, and voltage measurements.

After testing, we provide a detailed report covering all measured values, pass/fail results, and any recommendations. If issues are found, we can quote the rectification work on the spot. For compliant installations, we confirm the results in writing.

EV Charging Testing FAQs

How long does EV charger testing take?

A standard residential EV charger test typically takes 45 to 60 minutes, covering the full circuit from switchboard to charger including RCD testing, insulation resistance, and a functional charge test.

My charger keeps tripping the RCD. What causes this?

Common causes include an incorrect RCD type (some chargers produce DC fault currents that standard Type A RCDs detect as a fault), a developing insulation fault in the cable run, or a fault within the charger unit itself. We test systematically to isolate the cause.

Do I need my vehicle present during testing?

Ideally, yes. A functional test with the vehicle connected confirms the charger communicates correctly and delivers power. However, the electrical circuit and protection device testing can be completed without a vehicle present.

Can you test chargers installed by other electricians?

Yes. We regularly provide independent testing and verification of existing EV charger installations, regardless of who installed them. This is particularly useful for property purchases or insurance compliance.
