Exit and emergency lights guide building occupants to safety during a power failure or emergency. Every commercial building, strata complex, and public venue in Victoria must have these systems installed, tested, and maintained to AS 2293.
New Installations
We design and install exit and emergency lighting systems for new buildings, fit-outs, and tenancy changes. Placement is calculated to meet the minimum illumination levels along paths of travel required by AS 2293.1, with exit signs positioned at every exit door, change of direction, and intersection along the escape route.
Six-Monthly Discharge Testing
AS 2293.2 requires a full discharge test every six months where battery-backed emergency fittings must maintain illumination for a minimum of 90 minutes on battery power alone. We disconnect mains supply, run the full test, record results for each fitting, and identify any units that fail to hold their charge.
Repairs and Replacements
When fittings fail testing, we replace batteries, lamps, diffusers, or entire units as needed. We use quality fittings rated for their application and carry common replacement parts so most repairs are completed during the same visit as the test.
Logbook and Compliance Records
Every test generates a detailed report covering each fitting’s location, type, test result, and any rectification work completed. These records satisfy the documentation requirements for your Essential Safety Measures annual statement and provide a clear audit trail for council or fire authority inspections.

Types of Fittings
Exit Signs
Illuminated green running-man exit signs positioned at every exit door and along escape routes. Available in surface-mount, recessed, and blade (side-mount) configurations. LED versions offer longer lamp life and lower energy consumption than older fluorescent units.
Emergency Battens
Ceiling-mounted emergency light fittings that illuminate paths of travel during a power failure. Battery packs are either integrated into the fitting or located in a central battery system. We size and space these to achieve the minimum 0.2 lux along escape paths required by the standard.
Maintained vs Non-Maintained
Maintained fittings run continuously (exit signs are always lit). Non-maintained fittings only activate during a power failure. We advise on which type is appropriate for each area of your building based on the occupancy classification and path-of-travel requirements.

Testing Requirements
Under AS 2293.2, exit and emergency lighting systems require regular testing at prescribed intervals. The six-monthly 90-minute discharge test is the most significant, simulating a full power failure to verify that every fitting can sustain illumination for the required duration on battery backup alone.
Between discharge tests, monthly function checks verify that each fitting activates correctly when mains supply is interrupted. We also inspect for physical damage, obstructed exit signs, missing diffusers, and any changes to the building layout that might affect escape route visibility.

Does my building need exit and emergency lighting?
Any building with an occupancy permit that includes fire safety provisions will typically require exit and emergency lighting. This includes offices, retail shops, warehouses, apartment common areas, restaurants, hotels, and all public buildings. Single dwellings are generally exempt.
How long should emergency lights stay on during a power failure?
The minimum requirement under AS 2293 is 90 minutes of illumination on battery backup. During the six-monthly discharge test, we verify that each fitting achieves this duration. Fittings that fall short need battery replacement or unit replacement.
Can testing be done outside business hours?
Yes. Discharge testing requires switching off the mains supply to the emergency lighting circuit for 90 minutes, which means the emergency fittings will be operating on battery during that time. If the building is occupied, we schedule testing during quiet periods or after hours to avoid inconvenience.
What happens when a fitting fails the test?
We identify the fault, which is most commonly a depleted battery. If replacement batteries are available, we repair the fitting during the same visit. Otherwise, we schedule the repair promptly and note the defect in the compliance report. The goal is to have all fittings operational before the next reporting period.
