Downlights Done Properly

Downlight installation is one of the most common requests we get, and one of the most commonly done badly. Poorly spaced downlights create dark spots and uneven light. Cheap fittings overheat against insulation. We approach every downlight job with proper layout planning, quality fittings, and compliance with current safety standards.

Layout and Spacing Design

The spacing between downlights matters more than most people realise. Too far apart and you get dark patches between pools of light. Too close and the ceiling looks cluttered. We calculate spacing based on ceiling height, beam angle, and room dimensions to achieve even, balanced illumination without over-lighting.

IC-4 Rated Fittings for Insulation Contact

In Melbourne, most ceiling cavities contain insulation. Downlights must be IC-4 rated (Insulation Contact, Fire Rated) to be safely covered by insulation without creating a fire risk. We only install fittings that meet this standard, and we check the existing insulation during installation to ensure everything is compliant.

Halogen to LED Replacement

Replacing old halogen downlights with LED fittings reduces heat output, cuts energy costs, and often improves light quality. We replace the entire fitting (not just the globe) to ensure the LED driver, heat dissipation, and fire rating are all up to current standards.

Colour Temperature Selection

Colour temperature affects how a room feels. Warm white (3000K) suits living areas and bedrooms with a relaxed atmosphere. Cool white (4000K) works well in kitchens and workspaces. We help you choose the right temperature for each room and can install tri-colour fittings that switch between warm, neutral, and cool.

Whether you need a few downlights in a single room or a full-home LED upgrade, we plan the layout, install quality fittings, and leave the ceiling clean.

Where We Install Downlights

Kitchens

Kitchen lighting needs careful planning. We position downlights over benchtops and workspaces for task lighting, and use wider beam angles in dining areas. Dimmable options let you shift from bright work light to a softer setting for meals.

Bathrooms

Bathroom downlights must meet wet area zoning requirements under AS/NZS 3000. We install IP-rated fittings in zones above showers and baths, and position vanity lighting to provide even, shadow-free illumination for bathroom spaces.

Living Areas and Bedrooms

Living spaces benefit from dimmable downlights that adapt to different activities. We install warm white fittings on dimmer circuits, allowing you to set bright light for reading or low ambient light for evenings, all from one set of fittings.

Dimming and Smart Control

Not all LED downlights are dimmable, and not all dimmers are compatible with LEDs. Using the wrong combination causes flickering, buzzing, or limited dimming range. We pair dimmable LED downlights with compatible trailing-edge LED dimmers to ensure smooth, flicker-free dimming across the full range.

For smart home setups, we can install downlights on smart switches or use smart-compatible fittings that integrate with systems like Google Home and Apple HomeKit. This gives you voice control, scheduling, and scene setting without replacing the entire fitting later.

Downlight FAQs

How many downlights do I need per room?

This depends on room size, ceiling height, and the beam angle of the fitting. As a rough guide, a standard bedroom might need four to six downlights, while an open-plan kitchen and living area could need 12 or more. We calculate exact numbers based on the specific room.

Can I install downlights in a concrete ceiling?

Yes, but it requires core drilling rather than standard hole saws. We install downlights in concrete ceilings in apartments and commercial buildings regularly. Surface-mounted or recessed options are available depending on the structure.

Do I need to replace the whole fitting or just the globe?

For halogen to LED conversions, we recommend replacing the entire fitting. LED replacement globes in old halogen housings often have poor heat dissipation and may not meet current IC rating requirements. A complete fitting replacement ensures proper fire rating and performance.

What is the difference between fixed and gimbal downlights?

Fixed downlights point straight down and provide general area lighting. Gimbal (tiltable) downlights can be angled up to 30 degrees to highlight artwork, a feature wall, or a specific area. We use a mix of both depending on the room layout.

Will installing downlights affect my insulation?

With IC-4 rated fittings, insulation can sit directly over the downlight without creating a fire risk. We check and adjust insulation around each fitting during installation to maintain your ceiling’s thermal performance.
