Renovation Electrical Stages
Renovation electrical work follows a staged process that coordinates with your builder, plumber, and other trades. Getting the electrical scope right at the planning stage saves time and money during construction.
Planning and Layout
We review your renovation plans and walk through the power point locations, lighting positions, switch placement, and any dedicated circuits needed. This is when decisions about downlight layouts, kitchen appliance circuits, and data point locations are finalised. Changes made after the walls go up are significantly more disruptive and costly.
Rough-In
Once the framing is up and before plasterboard goes on, we run all the cable, install mounting brackets for power points and switches, and position light fitting boxes. Cable runs are secured, labelled, and photographed before they are covered. The rough-in is inspected by the building surveyor before the builder can close the walls.
Fit-Off
After plastering and painting, we return to install the power points, switches, light fittings, exhaust fans, and any hardwired appliances. This is the final electrical stage before handover. We connect everything, test every circuit, and issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the work.
Switchboard Upgrades
Renovations often add circuits that exceed the capacity of older switchboards. We assess the existing board at the planning stage and include a switchboard upgrade in the scope if needed. This ensures the new circuits have proper RCD protection and the board has room for future expansion.

Kitchen Renovation

Bathroom Renovation
Bathrooms require careful attention to IP ratings and zone restrictions. We install exhaust fans, heated towel rails, mirror lighting, heat lamps, and shaver outlets in compliance with the wiring rules for wet areas. All circuits are RCD-protected.
Extensions and Additions
New rooms need new circuits, and the existing switchboard may need upgrading to handle the additional load. We work with your builder from the slab stage through to completion, handling both the structural wiring and the connection back to the main board.

Renovation Electrician FAQs
When should the electrician be involved in a renovation?
As early as possible. Ideally during the design phase so we can advise on power point locations, lighting plans, and any switchboard or supply upgrades needed. The rough-in happens after framing and before plasterboard, and the fit-off happens after painting.
Does a renovation require upgrading the switchboard?
Often, yes. Older switchboards may not have enough space for the new circuits, or they may lack RCD protection that is now mandatory on new circuits. We assess the switchboard during planning and include the upgrade in the scope if required.
Can I live in the house during a renovation rewire?
In most cases, yes. We stage the work so that essential circuits remain live while we work on the renovated areas. There may be brief periods when power to specific areas needs to be turned off, but we plan these around your schedule and keep disruption to a minimum.
What electrical certificates are needed for a renovation?
All prescribed electrical work requires a Certificate of Electrical Safety. For renovations requiring a building permit, the electrical work also needs to be signed off by the building surveyor. We handle all the documentation and provide copies for your records and the builder.
