The Tesla Wall Connector is a sleek, well-engineered charger that integrates seamlessly into the Tesla ecosystem. If you drive a Tesla and have no plans to change, it is genuinely excellent. The app integration with your Tesla vehicle is seamless – charge scheduling, monitoring, and software updates all flow through one app.
The catch: It uses Tesla’s proprietary connector. Other EV brands can use it with an adaptor, but the integration is not as smooth. If you or your household ever switch to a non-Tesla EV, you may find yourself wanting to replace the charger. With Melbourne’s EV market maturing and multiple brands now popular, this matters.
No solar integration: The Tesla Wall Connector does not natively integrate with solar inverters or manage solar surplus charging. This is a meaningful limitation for Melbourne homes with solar.

Excellent if you are a committed Tesla owner. If you have solar or might switch brands, choose the Zappi.
Wallbox Pulsar Plus

Solar integration: The Wallbox app has an “Eco-Smart” feature that can use CT clamp data to manage charging based on surplus energy, but it is not as sophisticated or reliable as the Zappi’s dedicated approach in our experience.
Good for: Renters or those in apartments who need a compact unit. Businesses wanting OCPP connectivity for reporting.
The Verdict
A solid choice for apartments and tight spaces. Solar homes are better served by the Zappi.
ABB Terra AC Wallbox

ABB is a global industrial giant and their Terra AC range is built to commercial-grade standards. It is rugged, reliable, and OCPP-ready – making it excellent for car parks, offices, strata buildings, and fleet charging applications. For residential use, it is slightly over-engineered and correspondingly priced.
Best for: Commercial premises, body corporate EV charging installations, and businesses with multiple vehicles.

How to Choose the Right EV Charger for Your Melbourne Home
You have solar panels
Zappi is the clear winner. Its Eco and Eco+ modes can charge your EV using surplus solar generation, dramatically cutting your running costs. Feed-in tariffs in Victoria are declining, so using solar to charge your EV is more valuable than ever.
You drive a Tesla
Tesla Wall Connector for the cleanest integration, or Zappi if you also have solar. Both work perfectly with Tesla vehicles. The Zappi uses the included adaptor.
You are in an apartment
Wallbox Pulsar Plus or ABB Terra for their compact size, OCPP compatibility, and suitability for shared infrastructure. We handle body corporate proposals and strata-compliant designs.
You need fast 22kW charging
You will need three-phase power at your property. We check this as part of every quote. If you have it, the Wallbox Pulsar Plus 22kW or ABB Terra AC 22kW are the best options.
You want the best value
Zappi costs slightly more upfront but pays back through solar savings. Over 3 years a Melbourne solar home could save $1,500-$2,500 in electricity compared to a non-smart charger. That is a strong ROI.
You have a home battery

Is the Zappi worth it without solar?
Yes, still worth it. Even without solar, the Zappi’s smart charging modes let you schedule charging for off-peak times, set charging targets, and monitor energy use in detail. As tariffs get smarter (time-of-use plans are becoming standard in Victoria), the Zappi’s scheduling features will save you money. But if you have solar, it is a no-brainer.
Can a Tesla Wall Connector charge non-Tesla EVs?
Yes, with an adaptor (Type 2 to Tesla). Tesla sells a CCS adaptor that makes the Gen 3 Wall Connector compatible with most modern EVs. However, smart features and scheduling only work seamlessly with Tesla vehicles. If you have two EVs from different brands, a universal Type 2 charger like the Zappi is a better household choice.
What EV charger does Carlin Co recommend for Melbourne homes?

Is a 7kW or 22kW charger better for home use?
For most Melbourne homes, a 7kW charger is perfectly adequate. Charging overnight from a 7kW unit adds 50-60kWh to a typical EV battery – that is 300-400km of range. A 22kW charger only makes sense if you need very fast top-ups, have three-phase power already, and your EV supports 3-phase AC charging (not all do). We will advise honestly based on your situation.
Which chargers work with the BYD Atto 3, Kia EV6, and Hyundai Ioniq?
All three of these popular Melbourne EVs use the standard Type 2 AC inlet – meaning any Type 2 charger (Zappi, Wallbox, ABB Terra, Hive) works natively without an adaptor. The Tesla Wall Connector requires an adaptor for these vehicles. The Zappi is our top recommendation for Ioniq and EV6 owners with solar, as it maximises solar self-consumption beautifully.
Can I supply my own charger for Carlin Co to install?
Yes, we can install customer-supplied chargers in most cases, subject to the unit being AS/NZS 3000 compliant and appropriate for your supply type.
