No two Melbourne properties are identical. These are the key variables that move your installation price up or down:
Switchboard condition and capacity
Most modern switchboards handle a 7kW EV charger circuit with no issues. Older boards — especially those in inner-Melbourne homes built before 1990 — may need a partial or full upgrade first, adding $800–$2,500 to the job. We assess this during our free site visit.
Cable run distance
The further the charger is from your switchboard (e.g. a garage at the rear of the property), the more cable and conduit is needed. A short run of under 5 metres costs much less than a 20-metre underground run to a detached garage.
Single-phase vs three-phase power
Most Melbourne homes have single-phase power, which supports chargers up to 7.4kW. Three-phase gives you 11kW or 22kW options — better if you want faster charging, have two EVs, or are planning for the future. If you do not have three-phase at the property, the cost to have it connected from the street adds $2,000–$5,000 via your distributor.
Charger model and brand
An entry-level charger unit may cost $400–$600. A premium smart solar charger like the myenergi Zappi or ABB Terra sits at $900–$1,600. We recommend investing in a quality unit — these run 10+ years and the cost difference is modest compared to installation labour.
Indoor vs outdoor installation
Outdoor installations require weatherproof enclosures and appropriate conduit. In most Melbourne homes this adds $200–$400 to the job.
Strata and apartment buildings
Installing EV charging in apartment buildings requires coordination with the body corporate and often separate metering. Costs vary significantly depending on the building’s electrical infrastructure. We have completed strata EV projects across Port Melbourne, South Yarra, and Prahran — contact us to discuss your building.
We install all major brands. Here is a plain-English comparison of the most popular chargers in Melbourne right now:
Zappi by myenergi (Our #1 Recommendation)
$1,600 – $2,500 installed
The smartest charger on the Australian market. The Zappi monitors your solar panels in real time and automatically directs surplus solar into your EV rather than exporting it to the grid. If you have solar — or are planning to get it — the Zappi pays for itself quickly. Carlin Co is a certified myenergi installer. Available in 7kW and 22kW versions.
Tesla Wall Connector
$1,400 – $2,200 installed
Tesla’s own charger. Works with all EV brands (not just Teslas) via the included adapter. Clean, slim design. No solar integration built in — it charges at a fixed rate regardless of what your solar is generating. A solid choice if you do not have solar.
ABB Terra AC
$1,500 – $2,400 installed
Commercial-grade quality in a residential unit. Robust, simple, and reliable. A popular choice for garages and carports where durability matters. No smart solar features.
Wallbox Pulsar Plus
$1,400 – $2,200 installed
Compact design, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi app control, good software. Popular choice for apartments. No solar optimisation without additional hardware.
Our honest advice: If you have solar panels or plan to get them, the Zappi is the best charger on the market for Melbourne homes — it is the only mass-market charger designed specifically to use solar power first. If you do not have solar, the Tesla Wall Connector is an excellent value choice and works with every EV brand.
No hidden extras. Here’s exactly what Carlin Co includes in every EV charger installation quote.
Supply and installation of your chosen EV charger (7kW or 22kW), wall-mounted at your chosen location. We handle all cable runs, conduit, and weatherproofing.
A dedicated 32A circuit from your switchboard to the charger, with correct cable sizing for your load. No overloading existing circuits.
RCD (safety switch) protection for the EV circuit as required by AS/NZS 3000. Certificate of Electrical Safety (COES) issued on completion.
We assess your switchboard capacity before installation. If an upgrade is needed, we’ll quote separately — no surprises on the day.
For smart chargers like Zappi, we set up the app, configure solar integration if applicable, and test before we leave. You’ll be charging confidently from day one.
All Carlin Co installations carry a workmanship warranty. If anything related to our installation develops a fault, we come back and fix it at no cost.
Not sure what you need? We’ll come to you and assess everything for free.
