What “master electrician” actually means in Victoria

What is a master electrician?

In Australia the term describes an electrician or contracting business operating at the top of the trade: a Registered Electrical Contractor with A-Grade licensed tradespeople, current insurance, ongoing professional development, and a track record on complex residential, commercial and strata work. It is a standard of operation; the licence that makes it enforceable in Victoria is the REC.

Is a master electrician different from a licensed electrician?

Yes, in scope. A licensed A-Grade electrician is qualified to carry out electrical work. A Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) is the business entity legally allowed to contract that work to you, take responsibility for it, and certify it. When you hire Carlin Co you get both: REC 33210 as the accountable contractor, and A-Grade licensed electricians doing the work.

How do I verify an electrician’s credentials in Victoria?

Five minutes, three checks:

  1. REC check: search the company name or REC number on the Energy Safe Victoria register. No REC, no contract. Walk away.
  2. Insurance: ask for a certificate of currency for public liability insurance. A professional outfit sends it the same day.
  3. Certificate of Electrical Safety: confirm they issue a CES on completion. It’s your legal protection and a requirement for notifiable work in Victoria.

For solar, battery or EV charger work, add a fourth: check the NETCC register so you’re covered by the consumer code.

Why credential checks matter more for strata and commercial work

For an owners corporation or facilities manager, an uninsured or unregistered contractor isn’t a bargain, it’s uncovered liability across common property, essential safety measures and your annual condition report. Credential verification is the first line of an essential safety measures compliance chain. It’s why our strata electrician and commercial electrician clients typically run exactly the checks above before engaging us, and why we publish everything they need on this page instead of making them chase it.

The same standard runs through our electrical compliance testing, EV charger installation and solar installation work: named standards, documented testing, certificates you can file.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a master electrician cost in Melbourne?

Expect standard service call-out rates in the $120–180 range and quoted pricing on larger works. The premium over the cheapest quote is usually small; the difference in certification, insurance cover and workmanship is not. We quote fixed prices wherever scope allows.

Are master electricians worth it for small jobs?

The credential requirements don’t scale down. A power point replacement still legally requires a licensed electrician and still gets a Certificate of Electrical Safety from us. Small jobs are where unlicensed work is most common, so the check matters most there.

What insurance should an electrician carry in Victoria?

Public liability (we carry $20M) as the baseline, plus workers’ compensation for any staff on site. For strata and commercial engagements, your manager may also require contractor management documentation. We supply SWMS and insurance certificates as standard.

Do you supervise apprentices on site?

Yes. Apprentices work under direct A-Grade supervision, as licensing requires. The accountable name on your job is always REC 33210.

What is REC 33210?

It’s Carlin Co Electrical’s Registered Electrical Contractor number, issued by Energy Safe Victoria. It appears on our quotes, invoices and certificates. If a document claiming to be ours doesn’t carry it, contact us.

Which Melbourne areas do you cover?

We’re based in Melbourne and work across inner and greater Melbourne: CBD, bayside, inner east, inner north and west.
