The Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector is the current-generation home charging unit designed and sold by Tesla. It connects directly to your Tesla via the integrated charging cable and communicates with the vehicle for optimised charging. Here is what it offers.

Charging Speed

On a single-phase 32A circuit (the standard residential setup in Melbourne), the Wall Connector delivers up to 7.4 kW, adding approximately 44 km of range per hour. On a 48A circuit or three-phase supply, charging speeds increase to 11.5 kW or 22 kW respectively. Most Tesla owners on single-phase power find that overnight charging is more than sufficient to cover daily driving needs.

WiFi Connectivity

The Gen 3 Wall Connector connects to your home WiFi network, allowing firmware updates, remote monitoring through the Tesla app, and scheduled charging. You can set charging times to take advantage of off-peak electricity rates, typically between 10pm and 7am on most Victorian tariffs. This can significantly reduce the cost of charging your Tesla.

Power Sharing

If your household has two Teslas, up to six Wall Connectors can be networked together to share a single circuit. Installation Requirements

A Tesla Wall Connector installation requires more than just mounting the unit on the wall. Here is what we assess and install to ensure your charging setup is safe, compliant, and performs at its best.

Dedicated Circuit

The Wall Connector requires a dedicated circuit from your switchboard. For a standard 7.4 kW single-phase installation, this means a 40A circuit breaker with 6mm2 cable (or larger depending on cable run length). The circuit must include RCD protection.

Switchboard Capacity

Your switchboard needs a spare way for the new circuit and sufficient main switch capacity. If your board is full or outdated, a switchboard upgrade may be needed before the charger can be installed.

Mounting Location

We position the charger so the cable comfortably reaches your Tesla’s charge port. The unit can mount on timber, brick, concrete, or metal surfaces. We ensure the installation height and cable routing meet AS/NZS 3000 clearance requirements.

Tesla owners have several home charging options. Here is how the Wall Connector compares to the alternatives.

Standard Power Point (2.3 kW)

Using the Tesla Mobile Connector on a standard 10A power point delivers about 2.3 kW, adding roughly 14 km of range per hour. For a Model 3 with a 60 kWh battery, a full charge from empty takes over 26 hours. This works as a backup option but is impractical for daily driving if you are covering more than 50 to 60 km per day.

Dedicated 15A or 20A Socket (3.6 kW)

A dedicated 15A or 20A industrial socket on its own circuit is a step up, delivering around 3.6 kW. This adds about 22 km of range per hour, enough for most daily commutes with overnight charging. It is a more affordable option than a Wall Connector but lacks WiFi connectivity, scheduled charging, and the clean integrated cable management.

Universal EVSE (Type 2)

Universal EV chargers like the myenergi Zappi use a Type 2 connector and work with any EV, including Teslas (via the included Type 2 adapter or the vehicle’s built-in Type 2 port on newer models). The Zappi offers solar diversion charging, which the Tesla Wall Connector does not. If you have rooftop solar and want to charge primarily from excess solar generation, a Zappi may be the better choice.

How much does a Tesla Wall Connector installation cost?

Installation costs depend on the distance from your switchboard to the charger location, whether your switchboard needs upgrading, and the complexity of cable routing. A straightforward installation where the switchboard is in the garage typically starts from around $800 to $1,200 for labour and materials (excluding the Wall Connector unit itself). If a switchboard upgrade or long cable run is required, costs will be higher. We provide a fixed-price quote after a site assessment.

Do I need to buy the Wall Connector separately?

The Tesla Wall Connector can be purchased directly from the Tesla website or Tesla stores. We can also supply the unit as part of our installation package. If you already have a Wall Connector, we are happy to install it for you. Just let us know when you book your assessment.

Will I need a switchboard upgrade for a Tesla charger?

Not always, but many older Melbourne homes do. The Wall Connector draws up to 32A on a single-phase connection, which requires sufficient main switch capacity and a spare way in your switchboard. If your board is already at capacity, has old ceramic fuses, or lacks RCD protection, we will recommend a switchboard upgrade as part of the installation. We assess this during the site visit and include it in the quote if needed.

Can I charge my Tesla from solar panels?

You can charge your Tesla during the day when your solar panels are generating, but the Tesla Wall Connector does not have built-in solar diversion. It will draw from whatever power is available, which may include a mix of solar and grid. If you specifically want to charge only from excess solar generation, a myenergi Zappi charger with a CT clamp offers dedicated solar diversion modes. Tesla vehicles also allow you to schedule charging via the app, so you can time it to coincide with peak solar generation hours.

Can you install a Tesla Wall Connector in an apartment?

Yes, but apartment installations require body corporate approval and careful planning around cable routing and metering. The charger should ideally be connected to your individual lot’s meter so you pay for your own electricity. How long does the installation take?
