Comparing Australia’s Most Popular Home Batteries

If you’re considering home battery storage in Melbourne, you’ll likely be weighing up three dominant brands: Tesla Powerwall, BYD Battery-Box, and Sungrow SBR. Together, these three brands account for the majority of residential battery installations in Australia.

Each has genuine strengths and trade-offs. As a CEC Accredited installer, Tesla Certified Installer, and NETCC Approved Seller, Carlin Co installs all three brands and recommends based on what’s genuinely best for each customer - not what earns us the highest margin.

Tesla Powerwall 2

Specifications

Usable capacity: 13.5 kWh
Continuous power output: 5 kW (7 kW peak)
Round-trip efficiency: 90%
Chemistry: NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt)
Warranty: 10 years with guaranteed 70% capacity retention
Dimensions: 1150 x 755 x 155mm (wall-mounted)
Weight: 114 kg
IP rating: IP67 (fully weatherproof)

Strengths

The Tesla Powerwall remains the benchmark for home batteries, and its strengths go beyond brand recognition. The Tesla app is genuinely the best monitoring and control platform available - intuitive, responsive, and packed with features including Storm Watch (pre-charges before predicted severe weather), Time-Based Control (optimises for time-of-use tariffs), and Self-Powered mode (maximises solar self-consumption).

At 13.5 kWh, the Powerwall is large enough for most Melbourne homes without needing multiple units. The integrated DC-DC converter simplifies installation with existing solar systems, and the IP67 rating means it can be installed outdoors without any weather concerns.

Considerations

The Powerwall uses NMC chemistry, which has a shorter theoretical cycle life than LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries. However, Tesla’s thermal management system and conservative operating parameters mean real-world longevity has been excellent. The Powerwall is not modular - if you want more storage, you add another complete unit (minimum 27 kWh). It also requires a Tesla Gateway for backup power functionality, adding to installation cost.

BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS/HVM

Specifications

Usable capacity: 5.1-25.6 kWh (modular, in 2.56 kWh increments for HVS, 3.07 kWh for HVM)
Continuous power output: 5 kW (scales with modules)
Round-trip efficiency: 95.3%
Chemistry: LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate)
Warranty: 10 years with guaranteed 60% capacity retention
Dimensions: Varies by configuration (base unit + modules)
IP rating: IP55 (outdoor rated with protection)

Strengths

BYD’s modular design is its standout advantage. You can start with as little as 5.1 kWh and add modules over time, scaling up to 25.6 kWh without replacing any existing hardware. This makes it ideal for households that want to start small and expand as their needs grow or budget allows.

LFP chemistry offers superior cycle life (typically 6,000+ cycles vs 3,000-4,000 for NMC), better thermal stability, and no cobalt - making it the more environmentally responsible choice. The 95.3% round-trip efficiency is the highest of the three brands, meaning you lose less energy in the charge/discharge cycle.

Considerations

BYD batteries require a compatible hybrid inverter (they don’t have an integrated inverter). This means additional cost if you’re retrofitting to an existing solar system with a standard string inverter. The monitoring experience depends entirely on the inverter manufacturer’s app (Fronius, Goodwe, etc.) rather than BYD’s own platform, which can be hit-or-miss.

Sungrow SBR Series

Specifications

Usable capacity: 9.6-25.6 kWh (modular, in 3.2 kWh increments)
Continuous power output: 4.6-11.5 kW (scales with modules)
Round-trip efficiency: 95.8%
Chemistry: LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate)
Warranty: 10 years
Dimensions: Varies by configuration
IP rating: IP55

Strengths

Sungrow offers the most competitive pricing of the three brands, typically 15-25% less expensive than Tesla Powerwall for equivalent capacity. The SBR series uses LFP chemistry (same advantages as BYD) and pairs seamlessly with Sungrow’s own hybrid inverters, which are themselves competitively priced and well-regarded.

For new solar-plus-battery installations, a Sungrow inverter + SBR battery package often represents the best value proposition in the market. The round-trip efficiency of 95.8% is the highest of all three brands.

Considerations

Sungrow’s monitoring app (iSolarCloud) has improved significantly but still lags behind Tesla’s app in usability and features. Like BYD, the battery requires a compatible hybrid inverter. Sungrow’s Australian support infrastructure is growing but not yet as established as Tesla’s or BYD’s through their respective installer networks.

Head-to-Head Comparison Summary

Best overall user experience: Tesla Powerwall - the app, backup power integration, and brand ecosystem are unmatched.

Best for flexibility and expansion: BYD Battery-Box - start small and add capacity over time.

Best value for money: Sungrow SBR - lowest cost per kWh, especially when paired with a Sungrow inverter.

Best battery chemistry: BYD and Sungrow (both LFP) - longer cycle life, better thermal safety, more sustainable.

Best for retrofit: Tesla Powerwall - works with any existing solar inverter without replacement.

Best for new solar + battery: Sungrow or BYD - paired with a compatible hybrid inverter for the most cost-effective total system.

Which Battery Should You Choose?

The right battery depends on your specific situation:

You have an existing solar system and want to add storage: Tesla Powerwall is the easiest retrofit - it works with any solar inverter without replacement.

You’re installing a new solar + battery system: Sungrow SBR + Sungrow hybrid inverter offers the best value. BYD + Fronius is the premium alternative.

You want to start small and expand later: BYD Battery-Box - add modules as your needs or budget grow.

Budget is the primary concern: Sungrow SBR delivers solid performance at the lowest price point.

You want the best app and smart features: Tesla Powerwall’s software ecosystem is a clear winner.

Don’t forget to check your eligibility for Victorian battery rebates - up to $2,950 off regardless of which brand you choose.
