The Sauna Electrical Installation Process
A sauna heater is one of the most power-hungry appliances you can install in a residential property. Commercial-grade barrel and cabin saunas typically draw between 6kW and 18kW. Here is how we approach the installation from start to finish.
1. Site Assessment
We inspect your existing electrical supply, switchboard capacity, and the proposed sauna location. We confirm whether your property has three-phase power or needs an upgrade, and we measure the cable run distance to determine conduit and cabling requirements.
2. Power Supply Upgrade
If your sauna requires three-phase power and your property is currently single-phase, we lodge the application with your electricity distributor (CitiPower, Powercor, United Energy, or Jemena), install new consumer mains, and upgrade your switchboard.
3. Trenching and Conduit
We hand-trench or machine-trench the cable run from your switchboard to the sauna location. Heavy-duty orange conduit is laid at the required depth (minimum 300mm), with correctly rated cabling pulled through. We take particular care around established gardens and landscaping.
4. Circuit Protection
Your sauna gets a dedicated circuit with the correct breaker rating, along with RCD safety switch protection as required by AS/NZS 3000. We install an isolation switch at the sauna for safe maintenance access.
5. Connection and Testing
We connect the sauna heater, test the full circuit for correct polarity, insulation resistance, and earth fault loop impedance. Every connection point is tested and verified before we commission the system.
6. Certification
You receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the completed work. We walk you through the operation of the isolation switch and any controls, and reinstate the trench and garden area.
Case Study
Three-Phase Cabin Sauna Installation, Kew
This Kew homeowner had a premium barrel cabin sauna delivered and positioned on a concrete pad at the rear of their property. The sauna featured a dark timber exterior with a shingled roof and a high-output heater that required a three-phase power supply. The cable run from the main switchboard to the sauna location was approximately 25 metres through established garden beds with mature plantings, bamboo, olive trees, and potted specimens.
Our team hand-trenched the full run to avoid damage to the garden. We laid heavy-duty orange conduit at the required depth, pulled through three-phase cabling, and connected to a new dedicated three-phase breaker and RCD installed in the upgraded switchboard. An isolation switch was installed at the sauna for safe access during maintenance.
The entire on-site installation was completed in a single day by two electricians. Full testing and certification were completed before handover, and the trench was reinstated and the garden returned to its original condition.

Types of Saunas We Install
We handle the electrical installation for all types of residential and commercial saunas across Melbourne. The electrical requirements vary significantly depending on the type and size of the unit.
Barrel and Cabin Saunas
Standalone outdoor units with heaters typically rated 9kW to 18kW. Almost always require three-phase power and a dedicated underground cable run. The most common type we install.
Indoor Built-In Saunas
Installed within the home in a bathroom, basement, or dedicated wellness room. Smaller heaters (up to 6kW) may run on single-phase, but still require a dedicated circuit and careful consideration of moisture and ventilation.
Infrared Saunas
Lower power requirements than traditional steam saunas. Can sometimes connect to a dedicated power point circuit, though we recommend a dedicated circuit for reliable operation and safety.
Commercial and Spa Saunas
Gyms, wellness centres, hotels, and day spas require careful load planning and commercial electrical compliance, including emergency lighting and essential safety measures.
Sauna Electrical Requirements in Victoria
All electrical work for sauna installations in Victoria must comply with AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) and must be carried out by a licensed electrician. There are several specific requirements that apply to sauna installations:
- Dedicated circuit. Every sauna heater must be on its own dedicated circuit. It cannot share a circuit with other appliances, lighting, or power points.
- RCD protection. A safety switch (RCD) rated at 30mA must protect the sauna circuit. This is mandatory for all new circuits under current Australian Standards.
- Isolation switch. An accessible isolation switch must be installed near the sauna so the heater can be safely disconnected for maintenance or in an emergency.
- Cable rating. The cabling must be rated for the full load of the heater, with appropriate derating applied for underground installation, conduit grouping, and ambient temperature.
- Underground conduit. Outdoor cable runs must use heavy-duty conduit buried at minimum 300mm depth. Conduit must be orange (power) and correctly marked at entry and exit points.
- Earthing. The sauna structure and any metallic components must be correctly earthed and bonded to the electrical system.
- Certificate of Electrical Safety. A Certificate of Electrical Safety must be issued on completion of the work. This is a legal requirement in Victoria.
What We Need From You
When you get in touch for a sauna electrical installation quote, having the following details ready helps us provide an accurate estimate:
- The make and model of your sauna (or the specifications of the sauna you are considering)
- The heater wattage and voltage requirements (single-phase or three-phase)
- The approximate distance from your switchboard to the proposed sauna location
- Whether your property currently has single-phase or three-phase power
- Any access considerations such as concrete paths, retaining walls, or established gardens in the cable run path
If you are still in the planning stage and have not yet purchased your sauna, we are happy to advise on the electrical requirements before you buy. This can help you choose a unit that works well with your existing electrical supply.
Sauna Electrical Installation Cost Melbourne
The cost of a sauna electrical installation depends on the distance of the cable run, whether a three-phase upgrade is required, and the complexity of your existing switchboard. Here is a general guide to help with budgeting:
Single-phase sauna connection (short cable run, existing capacity): $1,500 to $3,000
Three-phase sauna connection (existing three-phase supply): $2,500 to $5,000
Three-phase upgrade + sauna connection: $5,000 to $10,000+
Switchboard upgrade (if required): from $2,000
These are indicative ranges only. Every installation is different and we provide a fixed-price quote after the site assessment so there are no surprises. See our full pricing guide for more detail on what affects electrical costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my sauna need three-phase power?
Most barrel and cabin saunas with heaters rated above 6kW will require a three-phase supply. Smaller infrared saunas and compact steam saunas under 6kW can often run on a dedicated single-phase circuit. We will assess your specific sauna model and advise accordingly.
How long does a sauna electrical installation take?
A straightforward installation with an existing three-phase supply typically takes one day. If a three-phase upgrade is required, the distributor application can add 4 to 6 weeks of lead time, but the on-site electrical work is usually completed within one to two days.
Can I plug my sauna into a regular power point?
Only very small infrared saunas (typically under 2kW) can safely plug into a standard power point. Any sauna with a conventional heater element must be hardwired to a dedicated circuit by a licensed electrician. This is a legal requirement in Victoria.
Do I need council approval for a sauna?
Planning permits for outdoor saunas vary by council. Many freestanding saunas under a certain size do not require a permit, but setback requirements from boundaries may apply. We recommend checking with your local council before installation. The electrical work itself requires a Certificate of Electrical Safety, which we provide on completion of every job.
What does a sauna electrical installation cost?
A typical outdoor sauna installation ranges from $2,500 to $5,000 for the electrical work where three-phase is already available. If a three-phase upgrade is required, the total cost is typically $5,000 to $10,000+. We provide a fixed-price quote after the site assessment.
Can you install the sauna itself, or just the electrical?
We handle the electrical supply, connection, and certification. The sauna unit itself is typically assembled by the supplier or a carpenter. We coordinate with your sauna supplier to ensure the electrical connection is ready when the unit is installed, or we connect to a unit that is already in place.
Do you service all Melbourne suburbs for sauna installations?
Yes. We service all Melbourne metropolitan suburbs for sauna electrical installations, from the inner city to the outer suburbs. Whether you are in Kew, Toorak, Brighton, or anywhere across Melbourne, we can help.
