Garden and Landscape Lighting Melbourne
Transform your outdoor spaces with professionally installed garden lighting. From subtle path lights to dramatic feature lighting, we design and install landscape lighting systems that make your Melbourne garden shine after dark. All installations comply with AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards and Energy Safe Victoria regulations.
Why Install Garden Lighting
Good garden lighting extends your living space into the evening. It turns a backyard that disappears at sunset into an outdoor room you can use year-round. Well-designed landscape lighting also adds real value to your property – it highlights the features you have invested in and creates a welcoming first impression from the street.
Beyond aesthetics, outdoor lighting improves safety by illuminating steps, paths, and level changes. It also provides a layer of security by removing dark areas around your home. The key is getting the design right – too little light and you lose the effect, too much and it looks like a car park.
Types of Garden Lighting We Install
Path and Walkway Lights
Low-level bollard or stake lights that line pathways, driveways, and garden edges. These create a soft wash of light at ground level that guides foot traffic and defines garden borders. We use quality LED path lights with warm colour temperatures (2700K to 3000K) for a natural, inviting glow.
Uplighting and Feature Lighting
In-ground or spike-mounted uplights positioned at the base of trees, walls, or architectural features to create dramatic vertical lighting effects. Uplighting a mature tree or a textured stone wall can completely transform the feel of a garden at night. We select beam angles to match each feature – narrow spots for tall trees, wider floods for walls and hedges.
Deck and Step Lights
Recessed LED lights built into deck boards, stair risers, or retaining walls. These provide subtle illumination exactly where it is needed for safety, without any above-ground fittings to trip over or mow around. Step lights are especially important for raised decks and multi-level gardens where level changes create fall hazards after dark.
Outdoor Entertaining Lighting
Pergola downlights, festoon lighting runs, and weatherproof pendant lights for alfresco dining areas, outdoor kitchens, and pool surrounds. We wire these on dedicated circuits with dimmers so you can set the right mood – bright for cooking, low for dining. All outdoor entertaining lights are rated IP44 or higher for weather protection.
How We Design Your Garden Lighting
We start with a site visit to understand your garden layout, the features you want to highlight, and how you use your outdoor space. We walk the property at dusk when possible – this is when you can see exactly where light is needed and where the natural focal points are.
From there, we put together a lighting plan that balances effect with practicality. We consider cable routes, transformer locations, switching arrangements, and future expansion. The goal is a system that looks effortless but is actually carefully engineered to last and to be easy to maintain.
Garden Lighting Pricing
Garden lighting pricing varies based on the number of fittings, the type of lights chosen, the length of cable runs, and whether a new circuit or transformer is needed. A simple front garden with four path lights is a different scope to a full backyard with uplighting, festoon runs, and deck lights on dimmers.
We provide a detailed fixed quote after a site visit so you know the full cost before any work starts. The quote includes all fittings, cable, transformers, switches, and labour. We also recommend where to prioritise your budget if you want to stage the project over time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 12V or 240V better for garden lighting?
Both have their place. Low voltage (12V) systems are safer for in-ground and garden bed installations because there is no dangerous shock risk if a cable is accidentally cut during gardening. They run through a transformer and are ideal for path lights, uplights, and feature lighting. 240V is better for higher-output applications like floodlights, pergola downlights, and festoon runs where longer cable distances would cause voltage drop on a 12V system.
Will garden lights increase my electricity bill?
LED garden lights use very little power. A typical landscape lighting system with 10 to 15 fittings might draw 50 to 100 watts total – less than a single old-fashioned incandescent bulb. Running that system for 6 hours a night costs roughly 10 to 20 cents. On a timer or photocell, you set it and forget it.
Can I add more lights later?
Yes, and this is something we plan for from the start. We size transformers and circuits with capacity to spare, and we can run spare cables to junction points in the garden so future additions do not require re-trenching. If you are staging a project, we will design the full system upfront and install it in phases.
What colour temperature is best for garden lighting?
For most residential gardens, warm white (2700K to 3000K) produces the most natural and inviting light. It complements greenery and timber. Cooler temperatures (4000K+) look harsh in garden settings and create an institutional feel. We specify warm white LEDs for nearly all residential landscape work.
Why Choose Carlin Co for Garden Lighting
We are electricians who genuinely enjoy landscape lighting work. We take the time to get the design right – the beam angles, the colour temperature, the spacing – because these details are what separate a garden that looks professionally lit from one that just has lights in it.
All cabling is buried in conduit to protect it from spades and garden tools, and every connection is waterproofed for long-term reliability. We use fittings from quality manufacturers that back their products with genuine warranties.
We also handle security lighting, switchboard upgrades, USB powerpoint installation, and power point installation across Melbourne.
