Pool and Spa Electrical Services

Electrical work around water carries heightened safety requirements. AS/NZS 3000 sets strict rules for equipment zones, bonding, RCD protection, and cable installation in the vicinity of pools and spas. We are experienced in the specific compliance requirements that apply to these installations.

Pump and Filter Connections

Pool pumps, chlorinators, and filtration systems need dedicated circuits with the correct cable size and protection. We connect new equipment, upgrade circuits for larger pumps, and install isolator switches at the equipment pad. Variable speed pumps, which are increasingly common for energy efficiency, may require different circuit configuration than older single-speed models.

Pool and Spa Lighting

Underwater lighting and pool surround lighting must meet specific safety standards. We install new LED pool lights, replace failed underwater fittings, and wire outdoor lighting around the pool area using fittings rated for the relevant zone distances. All pool lighting circuits are protected by dedicated RCDs.

Heating System Connections

Electric and heat pump pool heaters require substantial power. We install dedicated circuits from the switchboard, sized for the heater’s electrical load. Heat pump pool heaters in particular have specific requirements for cable size, protection, and sometimes three-phase supply depending on the model and capacity.

Equipotential Bonding

All metallic parts within the pool zone must be bonded together to prevent voltage differences that could cause electric shock. This includes pool shells, metal fencing, ladders, handrails, pump housings, and any other conductive elements. We test and install bonding connections to meet the requirements of AS/NZS 3000 Section 6.

Installing a new pool, upgrading equipment, or need a safety check on your existing pool electrics? We can assess the installation and ensure everything meets current standards.

Key Safety Requirements

RCD Protection

All circuits supplying pool and spa equipment must be protected by 30mA RCDs. This includes pump circuits, lighting circuits, heating circuits, and any power point circuits within the pool zone. We verify RCD protection and install additional devices where needed.

Zone Distances

The wiring rules define specific zones around pools that dictate what electrical equipment can be placed where. Zone 0 is inside the pool, Zone 1 extends to 2 metres horizontally, and Zone 2 extends further. Each zone has restrictions on the type of fittings and equipment that can be installed.

Certification

All pool electrical work requires a certificate of electrical safety. This documents the work completed, confirms compliance with the wiring rules, and is required for pool fence inspections and council sign-off on new pool installations.

Pool Electrical FAQs

Does my pool need its own switchboard?

Not necessarily, but the pool equipment circuits must be on dedicated breakers with individual RCD protection. If the main switchboard is a significant distance from the pool equipment, a sub-board near the pool pad can be more practical and cost-effective for the cable runs.

Can I put a power point near my pool?

Power points are restricted within certain zone distances from the pool. We can install weatherproof power points outside the restricted zones for equipment like robotic cleaners, outdoor speakers, or entertaining appliances. The exact placement depends on the pool shape and surrounding structures.

My pool light has stopped working. Can it be repaired?

Often, yes. Failed pool lights can be caused by the lamp, the transformer, or the wiring. We can diagnose the issue and either repair the existing fitting or replace it with a modern LED pool light, which uses far less power and produces better light output.

Do I need an electrician for a portable spa?

Yes. Even portable spas that plug into a standard outlet must be protected by a dedicated 30mA RCD circuit. Larger spas require hardwired connections on dedicated circuits. We install the correct supply and protection for all types of spas, from small plug-in units to large in-ground installations.
