Smoke Alarm Services
Victorian legislation requires working smoke alarms in specific locations in every home. The requirements are more stringent for rental properties and properties that have been renovated or sold. We handle supply, installation, testing, and compliance reporting.
Hardwired Smoke Alarm Installation
Hardwired smoke alarms are connected to the mains power with a backup battery. They are more reliable than battery-only units because they cannot be removed or run flat without your knowledge. We install them in the required locations: hallways, bedrooms, and living areas as specified by the Building Regulations.
Interconnected Systems
When one alarm detects smoke, all interconnected alarms in the home sound simultaneously. This is critical in larger homes where a fire in one area may not be audible from the opposite end of the house. We install wired interconnection between all alarms, or use RF-linked units where running cable between alarms is not practical.
Rental Property Compliance
Landlords in Victoria are required to ensure smoke alarms are installed, tested, and maintained in compliance with the Residential Tenancies Act. This includes hardwired alarms in specified locations, annual testing, and replacement before the expiry date. We provide the installation and testing, and issue compliance documentation for your property manager.
Replacement and Upgrades
Smoke alarms have a manufacturer expiry date, typically 10 years from production. After this date, the sensing element may no longer respond reliably. We replace expired units with current-model photoelectric alarms and can upgrade older ionisation-type alarms to photoelectric, which are less prone to nuisance alarms from cooking.

Victorian Requirements
Owner-Occupied Homes
At minimum, a working smoke alarm must be installed on each storey of the home. Alarms must be positioned in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, or in each bedroom if no connecting hallway exists. They must be maintained in working order.
Rental Properties
Rental properties must have hardwired smoke alarms (with battery backup) in all required locations. The landlord is responsible for installation and replacement. Tenants are responsible for testing and reporting faults. Annual checks by a qualified person are recommended as part of the landlord safety check.
Renovations and Sales
When a home is sold or undergoes substantial renovation requiring a building permit, smoke alarm requirements are triggered under the Building Regulations. This often means upgrading to hardwired, interconnected alarms throughout the home. We handle this as part of the renovation electrical scope.

Smoke Alarm FAQs
Photoelectric or ionisation smoke alarms?
We install photoelectric smoke alarms. They respond faster to smouldering fires (the most common type in residential fires) and are far less prone to nuisance alarms from cooking or steam. Victorian fire authorities recommend photoelectric alarms for all residential installations.
How often should smoke alarms be replaced?
Smoke alarms should be replaced by the expiry date printed on the unit, typically 10 years from manufacture. After this period, the photoelectric sensing chamber may not respond reliably to smoke. We check expiry dates during every installation and service visit.
Why does my smoke alarm chirp?
A regular chirp usually indicates a low backup battery. Replace the battery and test the alarm. If the chirping continues after a battery change, the alarm itself may be faulty or expired and should be replaced. Continuous chirping in a hardwired alarm can also indicate a wiring fault.
Do I need an electrician to install smoke alarms?
Hardwired smoke alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician because they connect to the mains power. Battery-only alarms can be installed by anyone, but they do not meet the requirements for rental properties. We recommend hardwired alarms for reliability and compliance.
